Broccoli

This plant has abundant green fleshy flower heads, arranged in the shape of a tree, on branches that grow from a thick edible stem. It is high in vitamin C, vitamin E and soluble dietary fibre, but above all it is notable for its richness in phytochemicals, which make it a very important food. A single serving provides over 30 mg of vitamin C and a half-cup provides 52 mg.2 The diindolylmethane found in broccoli is a potent modulator of the innate immune system response with anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-carcinogenic activity.3 4 Broccoli also contains the compound glucoraphanin, which can be converted into the anti-carcinogenic compound.
